Discover the Algarve

From sun-kissed cliffs to cobbled villages. All within 30 minutes of your stay

Base yourself in Portimão or Alvor and you’re perfectly placed for everything the Algarve is famous for: soft-sand beaches, Insta-worthy sea-caves, cliff-top hiking trails, fresh–off-the-boat seafood and centuries-old whitewashed towns.

Portimão & Alvor

Portimão is the Algarve’s lively “sardine capital”: an old harbour city where pastel-coloured townhouses sit beside a modern marina and a kilometre-long riverfront promenade lined with grill shacks.

Five minutes upriver, white-washed Alvor trades bustle for village charm.

Staying between the two means you can stroll cobbled streets for a glass of vinho verde one evening and wake to birdsong over the wetlands the next, without moving the car. Cafés, supermarkets and bus stops are all within a 10-minute walk, putting beaches, hikes and day-trip cities at your fingertips.

Fresh off the grill, straight from the vine

Here the sea, the hills and centuries of spice-trade all end up on one table. From smoky sardines flipped on dockside grills to medronho brandy sipped in mountain taverns, the flavours of Portimão and Alvor are simple, bold and always local. Use this mini-guide to plan your plate-to-plate wanderings.

🐟 Riverfront sardine grills (Portimão) Daily from 11 am, Rua da Sardinha fills with the aroma of sardinha assada. Order a plate, drizzle with local olive oil and pair with crisp vinho verde while fishing boats unload behind you.

🍹 Tapas alleys & rooftop bars (Alvor) In the cobbled backstreets you’ll find petisco bars serving octopus ceviche, grilled padrón peppers and Algarvian cheese boards. End the night on a rooftop for lagoon sunsets and craft cocktails.

🥃 Mountain flavours (Monchique) Day-trip inland for pastel-coloured houses, wood-fired frango piri-piri and the region’s fiery medronho brandy. Don’t leave without a warm pastel de nata from the village bakery.
